How Baking Brings Our Community Together at Highwood

We always knew our residents were a talented bunch, but even we were amazed at just how beautiful bread could be!
Thanks to the creative spark of our wonderful Wellbeing Lead, Morgan, a new activity was brought to life, Bread Art and it’s been an absolute success.
From mixing dough to crafting stunning garden scenes with herbs, seeds and vegetables, this hands-on activity has offered far more than just a chance to bake. It’s provided moments of connection, creativity and calm, reminding us all of the power of simple pleasures.

More Than Just Baking: Why It Matters
Sensory Stimulation
Bread making is a rich sensory experience. The feel of flour between fingers, the scent of yeast rising and the warmth of freshly baked bread all work together to awaken the senses. For residents living with dementia or other cognitive conditions, these sensory cues can trigger positive memories and improve mood.
A Creative Outlet
The beauty of ‘Bread Art’ lies in the personal touches. Residents designed their own garden breads, carefully decorating each one with colourful, natural ingredients. Whether replicating flowers from their childhood garden or creating patterns just for fun, it’s a gentle way to encourage self-expression.
Supporting Motor Skills and Confidence
Kneading dough, placing toppings and shaping the bread helps maintain fine motor skills in a low-pressure, enjoyable way. Every completed bake is a boost of confidence and a tangible, tasty reminder of ability and achievement.
Social Connection
Baking brings people together. Shared laughter, stories and teamwork filled the room as residents chatted about past recipes, family traditions and favourite meals. These social interactions are vital for emotional wellbeing, helping reduce feelings of isolation and promoting a strong sense of community.
A Taste of Nostalgia
The smell of bread baking often stirs warm memories of home kitchens, family dinners and comforting routines. Activities like these help residents reconnect with positive moments from their past, which is especially meaningful in a care setting.

A Truly Wholesome Day
At Highwood, we’re always exploring ways to enrich daily life. ‘Bread Art’ was a beautiful example of how creativity, community and care can come together in the most unexpected ways. It wasn’t just about the bread, it was about joy, purpose and pride.
And yes, we can confirm, it tasted just as good as it looked.
