Our VE Day Celebrations

residents stood together in VE attire

At Highwood, we recently marked VE Day with a heartfelt celebration that brought residents together in a spirit of remembrance, pride and community. The event honoured the courage and resilience of those who lived through the Second World War, while giving our residents the chance to reflect, share stories and celebrate the peace that followed.

Our home was beautifully dressed for the occasion, with tables laid out in true 1940s fashion. Bunting in red, white and blue adorned the lounge, and tables were decorated with Union Jack flags, fresh flowers and vintage-style tea sets that set the tone for a nostalgic afternoon. Many of our residents arrived dressed for the part, donning red, white and blue outfits with matching accessories. There was a real sense of occasion as they took their seats and toasted to both the past and present.

Our afternoon began with a special “Knit and Knatter” session, where residents reminisced about wartime memories while keeping their hands busy with knitting projects and cups of tea. It was wonderful to hear our residents share stories about themselves or their loved ones during this period of time. It was a comforting and meaningful way to open the event and set the tone for the day.

This was followed by a traditional VE Day-style afternoon tea served by our in-house kitchen team, with finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and sweet treats served on tiered stands. Residents were offered their favourite tipples, and whilst some chose to have a cup of tea, others opted for a glass of sherry or gin and tonic.

Each resident and visitor also received a red, white and blue lei to wear, which added a great touch to the cheerful atmosphere. Marking VE Day in this way helped bring comfort and recognition to those who wished to reflect, honour and remember. We are proud to be able to offer the opportunity for our residents to welcome loved ones and local individuals into the home and build on the wonderful community we have created.
