chef making meal for residents

Dining

At Highwood, dining is about much more than regular food served on a plate. It’s about creating a warm, welcoming environment where residents can enjoy delicious meals, feel connected to those around them, and have the freedom to choose how and where they eat. With a flexible, high-quality approach and a team who genuinely care, every mealtime becomes an opportunity for comfort, dignity and enjoyment.

It is important to us that our residents have freedom of where they enjoy their meals, whether it is in their room, our dining room, one of our lounges or in the garden when the weather is nice. It will always be their choice.

Dining at Highwood Care Home is Better Together

Mealtimes are important to us here at Highwood Care Home because they provide us with the perfect opportunity to gather with our residents, helping them establish strong connections with their loved ones and other residents; there is nothing better than having a delicious meal whilst making wonderful memories. We also provide meal alternatives and if a resident would like some special assistance, a member of our staff will happily sit with them, help and eat at their own pace.

We always try and promote the social benefits of group eating and encourage as many of our residents to eat together as much as possible. However, we do offer room service for those who prefer to eat within the tranquillity of their own room. Additionally, if any residents’ friends, family members or loved ones would like to join us for dinner, then they are more than welcome to. We’re lucky enough to have a number of areas where our residents can eat, drink and relax.

A Resident-Led Experience

Our meals follow a seasonal four-week cycle, offering variety and balance throughout the year. Fish and chips are a weekly favourite every Friday, and a traditional roast is served every Sunday, with the meat changing weekly. The main meal is offered at lunchtime and a lighter hot option is available in the evening, which provides our residents multiple opportunities each day to enjoy a warm, home-cooked dish.

Breakfasts are served with the same level of choice. From a full English to lighter options, residents can start their day however they like. On our residential floor, we’ve also introduced cereal dispensers to encourage independence and make breakfast a more relaxed, self-led experience.

Our kitchen team is led by a head chef with European fine dining experience and was recognised as an NACC regional finalist in 2023. Alongside our 2nd chef and kitchen assistants, they regularly adapt our menu to suit the preferences and needs of those living here. We are proud to offer an experience that is both personal and luxurious.

Making Dining with Dementia Simple

It is essential to focus on our dementia residents, and paying close attention to their eating experiences can make all the difference. Improving our dementia residents’ eating experiences is all about the small things, such as having meals served within a peaceful, clutter-free environment and making sure that all of our residents’ frustrations and tensions linked with dementia are relieved. We also have access to specialised tableware, which is designed to assist our residents with fine motor skills, meaning they can continue to enjoy eating independently.

A wheeled snack trolley moves through the dementia community each day, offering fruit, cake, biscuits and other treats at times that feel natural to each person’s routine. Drinks can be requested for residents’ rooms and are also available from fridges throughout the home, which ensures hydration is simple and accessible at all times.
